On May 6th, we celebrate “No Diet Day”, initiated by Mary Evans in 1992 to promote body positivity worldwide.
She created it to encourage people to shed the needless shame induced by the Fashion, Beauty and Diet industries.
Industries that create ideals that are impossible for the average person to obtain. They sell the idea that anything that is either “not stick thin” for women or “uber muscled and hairless” for men is “less than perfect”.
And of course, they then can sell you a product to help fix the problem they created!
Why is this a problem?
People have associated ‘healthy’ with unrealistic body types for far too long. The unhealthy and dangerous 70 year “fad diet trend” that is all the flavours of semi-starvation.
This fad has set us all up from the start for failure, with all the guilt and shame that its victim blaming systems gives us to carry.
We typically experience 5-year cycles of “yoyo-ing”, where we initially lose both muscle and fat but eventually regain the fat, and in even greater amounts than before.
During these cycles, the body stores away more fat than it previously carried, resulting in a rebound fat gain.
And of course, the victim of this faddish system is then blamed for it failing them – a double whammy serving of guilt and shame!
So, celebrate “No Diet Day” every day by recognising our bodies can be beautiful at all shapes and sizes, as we work in small and continual small ways to improve our health as much as possible.
There are a number of different ways that you can do this:
💖 Love yourself the way you look right now! (Incidentally Key 4 of the HOPE Protocol)
💖 Live a far healthier whole natural food, lower carb lifestyle. (Which naturally leads to a strong, slender and healthy body composition)
💖 Embrace body diversity and work to challenge the idea of one ‘right’ body shape.
💖 Compliment people on their contributions, achievements and skills, rather than focusing on appearance.
